Malus sargentii ‘Select A’
This compact, slow growing crab was discovered by Johnson’s Nursery, Menomonee Falls, WI, from a crop of open pollinated Malus sargentii seedlings. Red to pink flower buds open to sweet smelling white blossoms. It is smothered in fall with small, dark red fruit that persists until March. A compact and rounded form when young that spreads with age. Slow to medium growth rate. This cultivar is resistant to apple scab.
